Migraines & Headaches
Headaches are easily one of the top 5 reasons people seek chiropractic care. One study estimated that 9 out of 10 Americans suffer or have suffered form headaches at one point in their life. Whether it’s a chronic migraine sufferer or someone who woke up with a mild headache this morning — chiropractic can help.
Recently I had a patient in her early twenties who has been a migraine sufferer for close to 15 years- more than half of her life! In less than 2 weeks she had a 90% improvement. Now she has taken a preventative approach by making monthly appointments.
Sometimes they aren’ that easy. A few years ago, I had another middle-aged patient who had severe neck and head pain in the mornings for about two weeks following a car wreck he was involved in. After about 3 weeks a less-than-desired result an MRI was ordered and a bulging disc that was pinching a nerve was fun. We started non-surgical disc decompression and he noticed an immediate improvement. We continued with disc decompression and he eventually made a full recovery.
It’s essential that a collaborative approach is taken in headaches- especially if we aren’t getting positive results. We may utilize additional imaging or referrals to other healthcare professionals.
There are over 200 types of headaches. Most are harmless, however, some are life-threatening. Headaches can be classified as either primary or secondary. Primary headaches are considered benign (harmless) because they are not caused by an underlying diseases or condition. Secondary headaches make up about 10% of all headaches are caused by an underlying disease, like an infection, tumor, vascular disorders, or head injury. That 10% is why a proper exam and imaging must be utilized when diagnosing headaches- all of which a doctor of chiropractic is capable of performing.
Now let’s talk how effective chiropractic is with the treatment of headaches. A 2001 study published in JMPT showed two things: Full abstract here.
1- Chiropractic adjustments have significantly more effectiveness than massage therapy in cervicogenic headaches,
2- Spinal adjustments have effects comparable to common prescription medications for tension and migraine headaches.
Research and clinical experience show extremely favorable results with the treatment of headaches utilizing chiropractic care. Chiropractic is safe, effective, and costs less than traditional medical care. By seeing a doctor of chiropractic first it reduces the likelihood of drugs or surgeries and reduces the chances of becoming disabled. This is done conservatively and non-surgically with minimal time requirements and hassle on the patient.
