Is your condition treatable by a chiropractor?

Doctors of chiropractic (chiropractors) are trained extensively in 4-year post-graduate programs focused on the evaluation and treatment of conditions in of the neuromusculoskeletal (nerves, muscles, bones) of the human body. All chiropractic programs are doctoral programs providing a physical-level education that allows chiropractors to have the knowledge to perform a detailed examination, order x-rays and MRI’s, and even do a school physical for a student athlete. Their treatment is considered conservative care, meaning it involves no medications or surgical procedures, rather, it is focused on physical modalities such as spinal adjustments, manual therapies, exercise, and nutritional counseling.

Is a referral required?

The answer is no. As stated above, chiropractors receive physician-level training and are considered portal of entry providers meaning they have extensive knowledge of the human body and are able to examine and determine whether you are a candidate for chiropractic care or if you need care elsewhere.  Please note, some insurance plans such as HMO’s may require a referral from your PCP to see any specialist, not just chiropractors.

Treatment Goals

Overall, most chiropractors have a conservative and preventative mindset and philosophy in treatment. Some doctors may deal specifically with the preventative aspect of care and don’t have a large focus on specific injuries while some may deal specifically with car wrecks or sport injuries, and many have a combination of these two. Be very aware of this when searching and seeing a chiropractor for the first time.  If you don’t like the goals of one particular doctor, don’t be afraid to look for another for a second opinion.

Treatment Type

There are many types of chiropractors and just like any healthcare professional, everyone is unique in the care they provide. Some chiropractors provide a wide-array of services and some provide just an adjustment. Some chiropractic offices are geared heavily in rehabilitation, exercises and can often close resemble a physical therapist office (many chiropractors even have physical therapists working in their office).  Other offices may not have the machines and gadgets and provide hands on treatment the entire time you are there. What really matters here is your preference and just because you didn’t like the treatment type of a chiropractor you saw in the past, that does not mean the next one will be the same.  Many chiropractors will offer a consult at little-to-no cost giving you a chance to tour their office and discuss the treatment options they provide.
