Every Child Develops Differently—But Movement Matters
This is your sub-headline
Every child develops at their own pace, and milestones are meant to serve as guidelines—not strict deadlines. While some variation is completely normal, how a child moves is often just as important as when they reach a milestone.
As chiropractors with advanced training in Developmental Neuro Stabilization (DNS), we don't simply ask whether a child is rolling, crawling, or walking. We evaluate the quality, symmetry, coordination, and efficiency of those movements to identify areas where a child may be compensating.
Your child may benefit from an evaluation if you notice:
- Only rolling to one side
- Frequent arching while rolling
- Difficulty with tummy time
- Delayed sitting independently
- Army crawling
- Bunny hopping while crawling
- Bottom scooting
- Crawling with one leg tucked underneath
- Crawling asymmetrically
- Skipping crawling altogether
- Delayed walking
- Toe walking
- Frequent falls or poor balance
- One side appearing stronger than the other
- Difficulty crossing midline
- Appearing unusually stiff or unusually floppy
- Difficulty coordinating movements during play
Many of these movement patterns are not necessarily "bad" or a cause for alarm. Instead, they provide valuable clues about how your child's nervous system, muscles, joints, and movement patterns are developing. Our goal is to identify opportunities to improve movement quality early, helping children build a strong foundation for future milestones and lifelong movement.
Why Movement Patterns Matter
Children don't simply learn milestones—they build one movement on top of another. Each stage of development creates the foundation for the next. Before a baby can crawl efficiently, they first develop head control, rolling, weight shifting, trunk stability, and the ability to coordinate both sides of their body. Crawling helps prepare the body for pulling to stand, walking, running, jumping, and more advanced coordination later in childhood.
Sometimes a child reaches a milestone "on time" but develops compensation patterns along the way. Other children may achieve milestones later than expected because their body has difficulty organizing efficient movement. Neither situation necessarily means something is wrong, but both deserve a closer look.
At City Point Chiropractic, we evaluate how your child moves—not simply whether they've reached a milestone. Movement patterns such as army crawling, bunny hopping, bottom scooting, arching during rolling, crawling with one leg tucked underneath, toe walking, or consistently favoring one side may indicate that a child has developed compensations rather than balanced movement strategies.
Our goal isn't to force children into milestones before they're ready. Instead, we identify movement restrictions, asymmetries, and inefficient patterns that may be making development more challenging than it needs to be. By encouraging efficient, symmetrical movement, we help children build a stronger foundation for future milestones, play, sports, and everyday activities.
Our Assessment & Treatment Approach
Every child develops differently, which is why every evaluation begins with understanding your child's unique story. We take time to discuss pregnancy and birth history, developmental milestones, previous injuries, family concerns, and your child's daily movement patterns before performing a comprehensive movement assessment.
Rather than simply checking whether a milestone has been achieved, we evaluate the quality of movement throughout the entire body. Depending on your child's age, this may include assessing posture, muscle tone, primitive reflexes, head and trunk control, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, walking, balance, coordination, and overall movement symmetry. We also evaluate the spine, pelvis, hips, shoulders, feet, and surrounding soft tissues to identify restrictions or compensations that may be influencing movement.
Every treatment plan is individualized and may include a combination of:
Gentle Pediatric Chiropractic Care
Our gentle adjustments are designed to improve normal joint motion throughout the spine and extremities while supporting healthy movement and nervous system function.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
Using light, hands-on techniques, Craniosacral Therapy helps reduce tension throughout the head, neck, spine, and connective tissues, allowing children to move with greater comfort and ease.
Developmental Neuro Stabilization (DNS)
DNS focuses on restoring the natural developmental movement patterns that babies are designed to build during their first years of life. Rather than strengthening isolated muscles, DNS helps children develop efficient posture, stability, balance, and coordination through purposeful movement.
Primitive Reflex Integration & Movement-Based Rehabilitation
Persistent primitive reflexes or inefficient movement strategies can sometimes interfere with motor development. We incorporate age-appropriate exercises, play-based activities, and developmental positioning to encourage more organized movement patterns while making therapy enjoyable for children.
Parents Are an Essential Part of Care
The greatest progress happens between visits. Every family receives individualized home recommendations designed to fit naturally into daily routines. Whether it's tummy time modifications, rolling activities, crawling games, balance challenges, or simple exercises, our goal is to give parents practical tools that help reinforce healthy movement at home while making therapy fun for both child and parent.
Frequently Asked Questions
We know it can be difficult to know whether your child's movement is simply part of normal development or something that deserves a closer look. Here are answers to a few of the questions we hear most often.
My child is meeting milestones. Should I still be concerned?
Not necessarily. Many children reach milestones on time while still developing movement compensations. We focus not only on when milestones are achieved, but also on how efficiently and symmetrically your child moves.
Is it normal to skip crawling?
Some children do skip crawling and go straight to walking. While this can be part of normal development, crawling provides important opportunities to develop coordination, shoulder stability, trunk control, balance, and communication between both sides of the body. If your child skipped crawling or developed an unusual crawling pattern, an evaluation may be beneficial.
My child only rolls one direction or bunny hops while crawling. Is that a problem?
Not always. Many movement patterns are simply clues that a child may be relying on compensation strategies rather than balanced movement. Our evaluation helps determine whether those patterns are part of typical development or whether they may benefit from treatment.
Do you work with other healthcare providers?
Absolutely. We frequently collaborate with pediatricians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, lactation consultants, pediatric dentists, and other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care for each child.
Ready to Schedule a Developmental Evaluation?
