What to expect during your DOT physical
Your DOT exam is focused on making sure you can safely perform the essential functions of a commercial driving job. During your visit, we will:
- Review your medical history and any current medications
- Check your blood pressure, heart rate, and general health status
- Perform a vision and hearing screening
- Evaluate your ability to perform basic movements related to driving
- Discuss any medical conditions that may affect your ability to drive safely
When your exam is complete, we document your results according to FMCSA guidelines. You will receive the necessary forms for your CDL, and we will provide guidance on what to do next if additional follow-up is needed.
What to bring to your DOT physical
Bringing the right information helps your exam go smoothly and reduces delays. Please bring:
- Valid photo ID
- Current medication list, including dosages
- Glasses or contacts, if you use them for driving
- Any required specialist letters or clearance forms
- Recent A1C or lab work if you have diabetes
- Sleep apnea compliance data if you use a CPAP machine
If you are unsure whether a medical condition or medication might affect your certification, you can call our office before your appointment and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.
DOT Physical Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a DOT physical usually take?
Most DOT physicals take about 20 to 30 minutes once your paperwork is complete. If you bring the required documents and arrive a few minutes early, the process is usually quick and straightforward.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Walk-ins are welcome when the schedule allows, but appointments are strongly recommended so you do not have to wait. You can quickly reserve a time online using our DOT booking link, or by calling the office.
Are DOT physicals available every day?
DOT physicals are available on most weekdays, but not on Fridays. If you are working with a deadline, scheduling earlier in the week gives more time to address any follow-up items that might come up.
What happens if I have a medical condition like diabetes or sleep apnea?
Many drivers with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea can still be certified as long as their condition is well managed and proper documentation is provided. Bringing recent lab work, medication lists, and compliance data for CPAP machines helps the exam go smoothly and reduces delays.
How long is my DOT card valid?
Many drivers receive a two-year medical certificate. In some cases, a shorter certification period may be given if there are certain medical conditions that need closer monitoring, such as blood pressure, diabetes, or sleep apnea.
How do I schedule my DOT physical?
You can book your DOT physical online or by phone. Online booking lets you choose a time that works with your route and schedule.
